Teachers and system administrators both love Moodle because it’s so easy to add external tools. External tools are learning applications or content that teacher use with their classes. Here’s the information you’ll need to add an external tool in Moodle:

For System Administrators

1.  Login to Moodle and click on "Site administration"
2.  Expand "Plugins"
3.  Expand "Activity modules"
4.  Expand "External tool"
5.  Select "Manage tools"
6.  Open the "Add tool" menu
7.  Click "Configure a tool manually" and then "+ App"
8.  Fill in the following information:

Activity Name: What title do you want to be displayed on the course page?
Tool URL: What’s the URL to connect to the website? Be sure to include https:// in the URL or you may get a blank page.
Launch Container: Do you want the tool to appear within the Moodle course page (Embed), in the course page without blocks (Embed without blocks) or a new window (New Window)?
Activity description: What does the external tool do?
Display description on course page: What’s the purpose of the tool?
Display activity name when launched: Do you want the name to appear when the student clicks the link?
Display activity description when launched: Do you want the description to appear when the student clicks the link?
Consumer key: What key did your tool provider send you?
Shared secret: What shared secret did your tool provider send you?
Custom parameters: Did your tool provider tell you to add any custom parameters? Usually you do not add any.
Icon URL: Did your tool provider send you an icon URL to display next to the tool name?
Privacy Settings: What information do you need to share with the app provider?

Let’s go through the process of adding an external tool in Moodle using GradeSlam as the example.

Activity Name: GradeSlam
Tool URL: https://gradeslam.org/LTI/launch
Launch Container: New window
Activity description: Online tutoring, homework help, and essay review.
Display description on course page: Yes
Display activity name when launched: Yes
Display activity description when launched: No
Consumer key: GradeSlam sends you your own unique key
Shared secret: GradeSlam sends you your own unique secret
Custom parameters: None
Icon URL: https://gradeslam.org/images/logo.png
Privacy Settings:
✓ Share the launcher’s name with the tool
✓ Share the launcher’s email with the school

For Teachers1.  Open your Moodle course page and turn on editing
2.  Click "Add an activity or resource"
3.  Select "External Tool" or "Preconfigured Tool" (a preconfigured tool is a tool that has been added site-wide by a system administrator)
4.  Fill out the following information: Activity Name: What title do you want to be displayed on the course page?
