Adding external tools to Brightspace is a great way to enrich course content in your school. External tools are learning applications or content that you can add to course pages in Brightspace. Here’s the information you’ll need to add an external tool in Brightspace:

For System Administrators

1.  Go to Admin Tools > External Learning Tools > Manage Tool Providers > New Tool Provider
2.  Fill in the following information:

Launch Point: What URL did the tool provider send you?
Secret: What shared secret did your tool provider send you?
Tool consumer information: Should you use the custom tool information or the default information entered within your Tool Consumer default settings?
Key: What key did your tool provider send you?
Name: What is the tool called?
Description: What does the external tool do?
Contact Email: Who is your main point of contact for the tool?

Let’s go through the process of adding an external tool together using GradeSlam as the example.

Launch Point: https://gradeslam.org/LTI/launch
Secret: GradeSlam sends you your own unique shared secret
Tool consumer information: Default information
Key: GradeSlam sends you your own unique key
Name: GradeSlam
Description: Online tutoring and essay review
Contact Email: help@gradeslam.org

Now you'e almost done! Stay on the same page and finish adding the link to the tool:

1.  Go to Manage External Learning Tools Links > New Link
2.  Set the title of the new tool
3.  Add tool description
4.  Enable Allow users to view this link
5.  Under Key/Secret, select Tool consumer key/secret
6.  Under Security Settings, select Use tool provider security settings
7.  Select which audience you want to make link available to

For Teachers

The next step after the external tool has been created is to add the tool to your Brighspace NavBar so that students can start using it.

1.  Open your course page
2.  Go to Course > Navigation & Themes
3.  Click on your course’s NavBar
4.  Click Create Custom Link in the NavBar editor
5.  Fill in the following information:

Name: What is the tool called?
URL: Click Insert Quicklink > External learning tools > select tool
Behavior: Do you want the app to open in a new window, the same window, or the same window without a NavBar?
Description: What does the external tool do?
Icon: Do you want to add an image to your link?
Availability: Do you want the tool to be visible to students, teachers, and administrators?

Then, click Create > Save and Close

Let’s go through an example again to see what it looks like:

Name: GradeSlam
URL: Click Insert Quicklink > External learning tools > GradeSlam
Behavior: New window
Description: Online tutoring & essay review
Icon: https://gradeslam.org/images/logo.png
